For the last 10,000 years, the fate of the human race has been linked closely with that of agriculture. Yet over the last few decades, agriculture as we know it has changed dramatically, and a few giant corporations have taken over family farms and genetically modified our food supply.
Natural, non-genetically modified foods are increasingly rare, and even worse, the seeds that are needed to grow these non GMO foods are rapidly disappearing. If we don’t start paying attention and taking action, agriculture as we know it will cease to exist.

When a consumer goes to the grocery store in the U.S., they have no way of knowing whether they are buying for their families is genetically modified foods or not. In fact up to 80% of all food in U.S. grocery stores contain some genetically modified organisms (GMO’s).
Why should we care?
Even though most of the Corn, Soy, Cotton and Canola in the United States are GMO’s, they have never been tested long term on humans (other than you that is). The health effects of consuming these foods is entirely unknown, and studies on animals have shown that some of our worst fears may in fact be true. Please take some time to watch either The Future of Food or The World According to Monsanto (to the right).
The fact is, genetically modified organisms might actually lead to a complete loss of native seeds, which means that like it or not, we are on the path towards a future in which our food supply is entirely genetically modified and owned by large international corporations.

A recent study showed that over the last few decades, five giant biotechnology companies have bought out hundreds of smaller seed companies. These five companies – Monsanto, Syngenta, Bayer, Dow and DuPont – have completely taken over the marketplace for seeds, and farmers are forced to turn to them to buy seeds.
Because these companies genetically modified, and thus “created” the seeds that they sell, the companies legally own the patents for the seeds, and thus a corporation can literally own a type of food (corn for instance). Instead of saving seeds from the previous harvest like farmers have done for years, farmers are now forced to continue to go back to these companies and purchase seeds year after year.
With these giant biotech companies like Monsanto and Syngenta taking over the seed market and patenting GMO seeds, it is increasingly difficult for farmers to buy non GMO seeds, such as heirloom seeds or other natural varieties of seeds.
With our population growing rapidly in size and more people than ever going hungry, having a secure food supply is vital. Yet food security can only be achieved by having a diversified seed bank, with many different types of seeds that are suited to many different regions and climatic conditions. Having a few large corporations that have taken over the seed supply and replaced it with GMO seeds is dangerous and short-sighted.
What you can do about it
Now is the time for people to start buying and saving natural, non GMO seeds, before it is too late. Some community nurseries, small seed banks and native seed companies have begun to do this, and it is important to support these types of local efforts. If we don’t act now, we may run out of time.
Please buy and save some REAL non GMO seeds, and plant a garden as soon as possible. If you are buying your food from the grocery store YOU ARE THE EXPERIMENT.
The worst is beginning to happen already. It has been widely reported that bugs are becoming resistant to the pesticides in BT Corn (Monsanto GMO Corn). This has resulted in farmers spraying up to THREE TIMES the normal amount of pesticides on the crops. The pesticides not only get into the corn, but remain in the soil and build up (concentrating in future generations of corn).
To combat this, Monsanto is telling farmers they must plant “regular” corn next to the BT corn to keep down resistance. Of course, REAL corn is becoming hard to find, and will be contaminated if planted next to BT corn. It seems we have a major problem on our hands. In the United States, farmers are paid to grow GMO corn, which in turn, is destroying future generation of not only corn, but anything else they choose to grow there (and making it cheap to produce and send to other countries). Please continue to support NON GMO SEEDS and the labeling of GMO’s in your area.
